For this assignment we were tasked with creating a poster for a film we watched that used both graphic design and photography. The poster needed to communicate its message/general idea immediately (within 3 seconds). Our objectives were to visually represent the story, gain an understanding of image making, manipulation, and montage, learn how to use Adobe Photoshop, explore the design process and improve craft, and understand typeface choice in relation to conveying meaning. I made around 20 different posters before refining my design into this final creation. My idea was to convey the documentarian style of videography and cinema used in the film by making the images appear like a scrapbook. The layering/distance between the stock images and the background were meant to represent society’s removal from acknowledging the imminent problems our planet is facing. I started with my own photograph of the ocean as the background, and the plastic bag image as the clipping mask for the typeface, which I also used to create a polaroid-like effect around each stock image. During my design process, I decided to switch the background and typeface images, and realized how that choice created a stronger message, especially when I added a tint to the plastic bag background in Photoshop. I had literally created a “plastic ocean”. Created and designed by Livv Welch using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
